Engineering Bricks
There are two classes of engineering bricks, Class A and Class B. Generally you will find that Class B engineering bricks are more commonly used. The engineering bricks are used for their physical characteristics and not for the way they look. Engineering bricks are used when a strong durable brick is required; this brick has high compressive strength and low water absorption.
It is recommended that these bricks are not used for facing work as they may have minor chips or colour fades that would not have been checked at time of manufacturing.
Class A engineering bricks can be used as a damp course brick on some situations as there compressive strength is more than 125N/mm2 with water absorption of fewer than 4.5%. The Class B engineering bricks have a compressive strength of 75N/mm2 or more and water absorption of 7% or less.
Engineering bricks can be used below ground due to their high strength and low absorption levels, unlike some facing bricks, engineering bricks will not fall apart if they freeze however it is important to note that engineering bricks tend to be used for hidden work where strength is essential, as opposed to on view where the bricks need to look nice.
Generally speaking you will find Class B engineering bricks are of a smooth red colour and among the cheapest bricks available for sale, whereas the Class A engineering bricks are often blue-grey in appearance and more costly to purchase due to their lower level water absorption.
