Common Bricks

Due to the low compressive strength of common bricks they will often be used for internal bricks work. Common bricks tend to be of lower quality than engineering bricks and therefore should not be used for below ground work. Unlike facing bricks little attempt is made to control the colour or appearance of the brick so they are best used for internal brickwork where they are unseen.

A generic term for ‘flettons’ is ‘frogged common’ or even LBC faced, these common bricks have a common colour base and this is then added to with different face colours, ideal for internal bricks that may be on view.

The common brick is designed to be used for all types of construction above and below dpc level, sometimes these bricks are use independently of dense aggregate blocks and other times they are used in conjunction with dense aggregate blocks.

Because of the aggregates used in the manufacturing process, the common bricks are provided with density, strength and thermal conductivity values. These values are compatible with the majority of dense concrete blocks available for sale.

Common bricks are able to withstand repeated cycles of attack from bad weather such as rain and frost. Over time, as the good quality, dense common concrete brick ages it will harden. There have been numerous independently controlled laboratory experiments where the common concrete bricks have been put through the most rigorous freeze-thaw tests. These tests are designed to establish the durability of the common brick for masonry.
